What is Acoustic Treatment—and How Can Acoustic Panels Assist?

Have you ever tried to focus, record audio, or simply enjoy music—only to be thrown off by distracting echoes, background noise, or strange reverberations? If so, your space might be telling you it’s time for an acoustic upgrade.

Whether you're building a podcast studio, enhancing a quiet nook, or looking to improve sound quality in a commercial space, acoustic treatment can make all the difference. And with the modern look of AcousticMOD slat wood acoustic wall panels, you don't have to sacrifice style to achieve superior sound.

Follow along for a quick breakdown of acoustic treatment and why acoustic panels are one of the easiest, most stylish ways to take control of your space’s sound performance.

What is Acoustic Treatment?

Acoustic treatment is the use of specific materials and strategies to manage how sound behaves in a room. More specifically, it’s how you influence the absorbing, diffusing, or blocking of sound to reduce echo, ambient noise, and distortion.

Acoustic treatment is especially important in rooms where clear audio or speech is essential, but it’s equally helpful in everyday spaces where excessive noise is a distraction. You can use acoustic treatment panels and other materials and techniques to achieve a variety of effects.

Where Acoustic Treatments Make a Major Difference

  • In home theaters and music rooms, acoustic panels enhance clarity and create a richer sound experience.
  • Podcasters and musicians can use them to reduce background noise and reverberation for professional-quality recordings.
  • In home offices or reading spaces, acoustic treatments cut down on distractions and promote better focus.
  • Restaurants, hotels, and other service venues use acoustic treatments to reduce noise, prevent sound bleeding (which happens when sound bleeds from one room or space to another), and enhance the guest experience.
  • In classrooms and business environments like open offices, shared workspaces, or conference areas, acoustic treatments can minimize ambient noise while improving speech clarity—making communication and collaboration more effective.

How Well Do Acoustic Panels Work?

The AcousticMOD slat wood acoustic panels we offer at Barron Designs have a 0.45 Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating, which falls under Class D sound absorption according to ISO 11654. This means that, on their own, AcousticMOD slat wood acoustic wall panels offer moderate or balanced sound absorption, with 45% of sound waves absorbed and 55% reflected. For many settings—like reading rooms or offices—this level of sound absorption is ideal.

Achieving Class A Sound Absorption

Want more than just moderate noise control? AcousticMOD acoustic wall panels can achieve a Class A sound absorption rating, which means the acoustic panels will absorb more than 90% of sound waves directed at them. To achieve this level of sound absorption, the panels should be installed over wood battens with 45 millimeters of mineral wool behind them. This setup is ideal for professional studios, media rooms, or anywhere pristine sound control is needed.

Where Should Acoustic Panels Be Placed in a Room?

Best Practices for Acoustic Panel Placement

  • For speech clarity in offices or gathering spaces, install panels at head level—where voices typically project.
  • In audio-heavy environments like recording studios or music rooms, place panels at primary reflection points (the first spot where sound hits the wall from your speakers). To locate these, stretch a string from the front of your speaker to the opposite wall—where it lands is where sound reflects first, making it an ideal spot for a panel.
  • In larger open spaces, distribute your panels across multiple walls to reduce echo and balance acoustics throughout the room.

With AcousticMOD slat wood acoustic wall panels, you can quickly and easily transform interior spaces into stylish, acoustically enhanced areas. There are three different installation methods that you can choose from:

1. Adhesive Installation

Apply construction adhesive or grab adhesive to the back of the panel and press it directly onto the wall. This is the simplest and fastest method—great for aesthetic upgrades with moderate sound control.

2. Screw Installation

Screw through the acoustic felt layer between the slats and into the wall. This method is sturdy and still keeps fasteners hidden from view.

3. Install Over Battens and Use Mineral Wool (For Maximum Sound Absorption)

Mount furring strips or wood battens to the wall, fill the space with 45mm mineral wool, then attach panels to the battens using screws or nails.

Overall, the first two installation methods are the fastest and most user-friendly—perfect if you’re aiming for a quick upgrade and moderate sound control. But for maximum acoustic performance, we recommend the third method. Installing over furring strips creates a built-in air gap that naturally enhances sound absorption. And when paired with 45mm of mineral wool behind the panels, this setup allows you to reach a Class A sound absorption rating—the highest level possible.
