THE ART OF THE COMMISSION

"Fibre art is a demanding, labor intensive and exciting form of artistic expression.

Although the one-of-a-kind commission requires more time and energy at every step in the process from concept to installation, I find it more personally satisfying," states Barbara Barron, president of Barron Judaic Art.   She has worked for over 35 years in the field, having operated a fibre art gallery in Huntington LI, NY for over 25 years, creating art work for corporate and residential clients. For the past sixteen years she has concentrated exclusively on site-specific work, done on a commission basis for over 40 synagogues and Jewish institutions.

Fiber art adds warmth to the temple environment and a sense of intimacy to large open areas. The fibre wallhangings are defined through curves and abstractions, which soften the edges of a hard world--both visually and emotionally. One method employed for the fibre sculptures is a "wrapped fiber" technique, which was developed after years of study in the textile field.   Layers of fibre are wrapped, and the finishing layer is composed of lustrous threads, composed of dye resistant rayon and metallic fibers. Often, detailed hand and machine embroidered applique, utilizing fine silk fabric is permanently adhered to the wrapped fibre background.

Recently Barron has been creating brightly colored quilts for synagogue spaces.

Following the agreement to do the project, including price, the client pays a 50 percent deposit. The balance is due upon the delivery of the piece for installation. The price of the work is based upon the client's budget, as well as the size and complexity of the piece. To determine this, a site inspection is always preferable, where Barron can personally interact with the synagogue committee. An impression of the "overall statement" of the space, noting its shape, size, scale, color scheme, lighting, traffic flow and architectural details is noted. Color sketches, color samples and maquettes (small samples) as well as digital photography are routinely utilized for presentations. A pricing system is often based upon square footage. Currently, the range is $150.00 to $450.00

The final step in the process is delivery and installation. If Barron is not directly supervising the installation, as is sometimes the case with long distance clients, explicit, detailed instructions for the on-site crew are included.

Barron has developed a unique art form, including a special flair for the art of the commission, into a very special contribution to contemporary Judaic art. She welcomes inquiries and will be happy to work with your committee.
